Evaluation of newly developed male sterile lines and restorer lines for their combining ability in pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L. R. Br.)

Some 204 pearl millet hybrids, developed by crossing newly developed cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) lines (MS 576A, MS 411A, MS 273A and MS 379A) and MS 841A and MS 5054A as controls with 34 inbred lines, were evaluated with 40 parents in New Delhi, India, during kharif 2001. Among the CMS lines, MS 411A was the best general combiner for grain yield, 1000-grain weight, ear girth and plant height. MS 841A, MS 5054A and MS 379A were the best combiners for earliness.
