Indian Punjab is basically an agrarian state where 82% of the cultivable land is under field crops, mainly cereals (rice/wheat), cotton and sugarcane. Adoption of rice/wheat cropping system has created many problems such as environmental degradation and economic unsustainability. India is the second largest world producer of fruits and vegetables with an area of 3.94 and 6.24 million hectares, respectively.
