Special experimental plantations of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) were established in Lithuania. Two-year-old seedlings were planted 1x1 in 4 sample plot blocks (30 trees in each block). Needles from experimental saplings were removed at a 30%, 50% and 100% rate in the 4th year after planting. Basal type artificial defoliation was simulated (older needles and needles from the basal part of crown were removed first).
