Abstract
An account is given of the scientific and practical criteria developed in Romania during 1992-2002 for in situ and ex situ conservation of the native poplars (Populus alba, Populus x canescens, Populus nigra and Populus tremula). Topics described include: the national methodologies and procedures regarding the identification, phenotypical assessment and conservation the genetic resources of native poplars; the distribution and area of poplars by forest administration; and recommendations to accomplish the national strategy on genetic resources of Salicaceae species.
