The interest in lucerne and red clover is increasing again because of their potential role in sustainable and organic systems. Nitrogen fixation reduces the use of inorganic nitrogen fertiliser in conventional farming and is the main source of this nutrient in organic farming. Two methods were used for evaluating fixation: yield difference and fertiliser equivalence.
