Drugs on the market to treat overweight individuals are limited. Sibutramine (Meridia or Reductil) and orlistat (Xenical) are the only drugs approved by the regulatory agencies in the USA and Europe. However, a number of other noradrenergic drugs (phentermine, diethylpropion, benzphetamine, and phendimetrazine) are approved only for short-term use in some countries. In the USA, purchases of phentermine make it the most widely used of the drugs for treating obesity.
