Notes on the morphology of the rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus

Chinese Journal of Rice Science 19(2): 190-192

The rice water weevil (L. oryzophilus) is a semi-aquatic species that parasitize rice roots as larvae and pupae. They have hydrophobic exocuticle and a well-developed tracheal system, which are surrounded by air bubbles in the mud, providing an adequate and direct supply of oxygen. There are 6 pairs of modified spiracles on each abdominal segment from the 2nd to the 7th inclusive. The modified spiracles are shaped as a hook curved forward and are partially retractile.
