Pollution-induced degradation and regeneration succession in conifer forests of the Kola peninsula
Allogenic succession in green moss spruce forests and lichen pine forests was studied in the northern taiga subzone, Murmansk region, Russia. The primary aerial pollutant in the area studied was gaseous sulphur dioxide emitted by copper-nickel smelters. Data on concentration of pollutants in atmospheric precipitation and soil, occurrence of plant species and nutrient content in soil are tabulated. The main reasons for disturbances in the course of natural regeneration of forests are discussed.
