Reproductive performance of Merino-Rambouillet prepubertal ewes under highland subtropical conditions. II. Male stimulation of seasonal anoestrus

This study was conducted to examine the effect of male stimulation (ram effect) on the ovarian activity of prepubertal Merino-Rambouillet ewes during anoestrus and transition periods (February to June) under the highland subtropical conditions (19 degrees NL). A total of 155 ewes (35.3+or-3.7 kg with 2.4+or-0.5 body condition score) were randomly assigned to one of eight experimental breeding periods (EBP). The ram introduction dates were 5 February, 23 February, 12 March, 30 March, 16 April, 4 May, 21 May, and 8 June. Serum progesterone (P4) concentrations were quantified by RIA from blood samples collected every 3 days for a period of 17 d prior to and 17 d after ram exposure. 16 ewes showed ovulatory activity prior to ram exposure. On the average, 63% of the ewes exposed to rams had an ovulatory response during the whole experimental period. Ewes from the EBP 16 April, 4 May, 21 May and 8 June had increased response to the male stimulus (53, 90, 79 and 85%, respectively) and had highest fertility rates (40, 78, 67 and 82, respectively) when compared with the other EBP. The reproductive efficiency can be improved by scheduling the breeding programmes earlier by male stimulation or ram effect.
