Smurfit Carton de Venezuela started a tree improvement program with Gmelina arborea Roxb. (melina) in 1984, and has made plus tree selections and established clonal trials and clonal seed orchards. Research on grafting techniques and controlled pollination techniques was undertaken in order to support a melina breeding program utilizing controlled crosses. Two grafting techniques, terminal grafting and lateral grafting, were investigated, and about a 75% grafting success was achieved with both techniques. Succulent scion material works best when using terminal grafts, and well-lignified material is better for lateral grafts. A pollination technique developed for eucalypts known as One-Stop Pollination (OSP) was investigated and compared to traditional crossing techniques for melina. The first attempts with OSP in melina have been very promising, with approximately a 30% success rate. This technique is very fast, easy, and cheaper than traditional pollination methods for this species.
