In the Goboly-region near Gyon in Hungary, which is a very important habitat of the rare Hungarian meadow viper (Vipera ursinii rakosiensis), the soil water levels during winter of 1999 and spring of 2000 were measured. Results showed that 60% of the measured area had high water levels throughout the whole period for various reasons, which indicated that a lot of the holes possibly used by the animals as shelter during hibernation was underwater.
