This paper discusses (1) the role of cooperatives as a catalyst for local entrepreneurial development and as a locally-based response to globalization, (2) the current status, growth, weaknesses and prospects of Philippine cooperatives, and (3) the economic significance of cooperatives (in terms of the market shares they hold) in selected countries worldwide.
