The mechanism of aluminium (Al) tolerance was investigated in an Al-tolerant cultivar (Alaska) and an Al-sensitive cultivar (Hyogo) of pea (Pisum sativum L.) seedlings. Al sensitivity was evaluated as the degree of root elongation inhibition in a calcium solution. Fifty percent inhibition of the elongation was observed after 24-h treatment with 5 micro M Al in Alaska and with less than 2.5 micro M Al in Hyogo. At 10 micro M Al, both cultivars exhibited more than 70% inhibition.
