The effect of N fertilizer on nitrate N contents and nitrate reductase (NR) activity in wheat cultivars 9430, Xinong 228, NR9405, Yanshi 9, Xiaoyan 6 and Shaan 229 planted in pots on Eum-Orthic Anthrosols was investigated. N increased NR activity in leaves. Without N, NR showed a double peaked curve during the whole growth period in all cultivars except Xiaoyan 6 and Yanshi 9, and the 2 peaks were observed during re-greening and flowering stages.
