Abstract
A field experiment was conducted during 2000-01 to 2002-03 in Karad, Maharashtra, India, to study the combined effect of organic and inorganic sources of nutrients on grain yield of basmati rice and wheat in rice (cv. Basmati 370)-wheat (cv. HD 2189) sequence. There 14 treatments consisting of (i) 100% recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF) to both rice and wheat, (ii) 50% RDF+50% N through farmyard manure (FYM) to rice and 100% RDF to wheat, (ii) 50% RDF+50% N through FYM to rice and 100% RDF to wheat, (iii) 50% RDF+50% N through FYM to rice and 75% RDF to wheat, (iv) 50% RDF+50% N through green manure (GM; sunn hemp) to rice and 50% RDF to wheat, (v) 50% RDF+50% N through GM to rice and 100% RDF to wheat, (vi) 50% RDF+50% N through GM to rice and 75% RDF to wheat, (vii) 50% RDF+50% N through GM to rice and 50% RDF to wheat, (viii) 75% RDF+25% N through FYM to rice and 100% RDF to wheat, (ix) 75% RDF+25% N through FYM to rice and 75% RDF to wheat, (x) 75% RDF+25% N through FYM to rice and 50% RDF to wheat, (xi) 75% RDF+25% N through GM to rice and 100% RDF to wheat, (xii) 75% RDF+25% N through GM to rice and 75% RDF to wheat, (xiii) 75% RDF+25% N through GM to rice and 50% RDF to wheat, and (xiv) 100% RDF+50% N through FYM to rice and 100% RDF to wheat. Application of 50% RDF+50% N through GM to rice with 100% RDF to wheat crop resulted in significantly higher system productivity and benefit soil fertility than all the other treatments, in which GM was not used. The application of 50% RDF and 50% N through GM to rice recorded significantly the highest net returns and benefit:cost ratio, irrespective of fertilizer level applied to wheat. Thus, 50% NPK to rice and wheat crop can be saved without decrease in yield and with maximum net returns and benefit:cost ratio, when a line of sunn hemp was grown with after every sixth row of rice, cut at 45 days after sowing and trampled in interrow space of rice.
