A bioassay for measuring the virulence of the insect pathogenic fungus metarhizium anisopliae fungi imperfecti against the termite nasutitermes exitiosus isoptera termitidae

A bioassay method is described in which termite workers from 1 colony of N. exitiosus were used to test the virulence of 1 strain of M. anisopliae originally isolated from Aneolamia sp. (Homoptera, Cercopidae). The termites were sprayed with suspensions of conidia and kept for 11 days at 25 .+-. 1.degree. C and 100% relative humidity. Data on mortality after 8 and 11 days were probit analyzed to give LC50, 95 and 99% fiducial limits, slopes and G for the bioassays. The mean LC50 value was 5.16 .+-. 0.67 .times. 105 conidia/ml after 8 days and 3.56 .+-. 0.040 .times. 104 conidia/ml after 11 days. The weighted mean slope was 0.789 .+-. 0.025 after 8 days and 0.916 .+-. 0.027 after 11 days. M. anisopliae is a promising candidate for biological control of N. exitiosus.
