A clinical trial of propiomazine and placebo in the treatment of insomnia in the elderly

A clinical trial of propiomazine and placebo in the treatment of insomnia in the elderly

Current Therapeutic Research 41(1): 6-12

The use of propiomazine as a hypnotic in the elderly was evaluated in a randomized, double-blind clinical trial. The trial was performed in two parallel groups with placebo as the reference therapy. Mean ages in the two groups were 87 and 83 years, respectively. After a one-week adaptation period, effects and side effects were recorded twice a week over four weeks. A control period of two weeks followed to elucidate possible carryover, rebound, or adaptation phenomena. Patients treated with propiomazine had significantly shorter sleep induction times, fewer awakenings per night, significantly deeper sleep, and much less hangover effect on the following day. No side effects were detected in these elderly patients. No tachyphylaxis, adaptation, carryover effects, or rebound phenomena were seen during or after this trial. We have found propiomazine to be a safe and effective hypnotic in geriatric patients.
