The experimental work was carried out in the Institute of Wheat and Sunflower (Gen. Toshevo, Bulgaria) during 1976-1979. Hybrids of similar and different ploidy levels (2n = 42 .times. 2n = 42 and 2n = 56 .times. 2n = 42) were used which had a common pollinator, the 42-chromosome triticale T-AD-17-B (2n = 42). Due to a higher mean fertility of ear, hexaploid F1 hybrids had a decreased percentage of disturbances in meiosis of pollen mother cells (82.74%) compared with hybrids of titicale with different chromosomes (95.65%). The hybrids obtained in crosses of single ploidy triticale revealed in the F2 greater potentialities for breeding for high productivity than hybrids of 2n = 56 .times. 2n = 42 triticale. Intervarietal crosses will likely be used in the near future as the major method for breeding triticale (2n = 42).
