A complex glyco lipid as possible precursor in the light driven biosynthesis of mono galactosyl di glyceride

A complex glyco lipid as possible precursor in the light driven biosynthesis of mono galactosyl di glyceride

Zeitschrift fuer Pflanzenphysiologie 88(2): 117-122

Short-term 14C-incorporation kinetics of the lipid fraction of spinach leaf sections revealed a complex glycolipid, termed GL. The lipid is slightly more polar than monogalactosyl diglyceride (MGDG) and contains sugar, glycerol and fatty acids in a molar ratio of 1:1:1-2. The fatty acid pattern is similar to that of monogalactosyl diglyceride and the sugar moiety shows variable amounts of glucose and galactose dependent on the physiological state of the material. An increase in the galactose/glucose-ratio of this lipid is accompanied by an increasing degree of desaturation of its fatty acid pattern. The data are discussed in terms of a fatty acid desaturation mechanism outside the chloroplast, in which GL may have an acyl carrier function in the synthesis of monogalactosyl diglyceride.
