A correlative study of cytology and carcino embryonic antigen determination in cerebro spinal fluid in the diagnosis of breast cancer cerebro meningeal metastases

A correlative study of cytology and carcino embryonic antigen determination in cerebro spinal fluid in the diagnosis of breast cancer cerebro meningeal metastases

Archives d'Anatomie et de Cytologie Pathologiques 29(5): 287-290

The detection of carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA)-like substances in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of adult patients with cerebromeningeal tumors or involvement was evaluated in conjunction with cytodiagnosis in the detection of cerebrospinal metastases of breast cancer. Fifty-three breast cancer patients under evaluation for brain metastasis or in the follow-up of known lesions were investigated. Patients (21) had neither malignant cells nor CEA in their CSF. Women (32) had proven cerebromeningeal malignancy. Of these 32 metastatic cases, cytodiagnostic and/or CEA determination were positive in 21 cases at the 1st CSF examination. An interesting finding was the detection in 4 patients of an abnormal CEA level before the diagnosis of metastasis (1-4 mo.). CEA research in CSF may be a useful adjunct of cytological methods in the detection of cerebromeningeal metastases in breast cancer patients.
