A geographical isolate of the black capped marmot marmota camtschatica in the anyui highland russian sfsr ussr

Zoologicheskii Zhurnal 66(6): 954-956

Colonies of the black-capped marmot were discovered in a low-mountain tundra area in the East Siberian Sea coast, near the Letyatkin's Cape, eastwards of the Kolyma River Delta. Seventy-nine animals of the species were registered on the area of 169 sq. km, i.e., 0.5 per 1 sq. km. On the average, 5.7 to 9.5 specimens were met in some transects per 10 km of fixed route. Fossils of the black-capped marmot were described by Gromov from the late Pleistocene sediments in the north-western Chukotski Peninsula. Disappearance of the species in the Chukotski Highland and in other areas of the North-Eastern Siberia is supposed to occur because of extermination of the species by man.
