A laboratory test of species exclusion in sigmodon fulviventer and sigmodon hispidus

A laboratory test of species exclusion in sigmodon fulviventer and sigmodon hispidus

Iowa State Journal of Research 53(4): 301-304

A laboratory study of species exclusion was conducted on cotton rats, S. fulviventer and S. hispidus. Exclusion occurred significantly more often interspecifically than at the intraspecific level. Food and water did not seem to influence species exclusion under these experimental conditions. The presence of negative interspecific interactions occurring between these 2 spp. when sympatric was substantiated. The data may fit into Terman's (1974) model for competitive exclusion.
