A new contribution to the study of polyphenolic compounds present in alcoholic extracts of myrtus communis l. seeds ii. ethyl acetate soluble fraction

In the fractionation of the extract of Myrtus communis L. seeds, following the scheme proposed by Hagerman and Butler, the ethyl acetate-soluble fraction is very rich in polyphenolic compounds. The product extracted in this solvent contains a large amount of hydrolyzable tannins, mainly ellagitannins. This extract was subjected to a new fractionation of column chromatography in Sephadex LH-20; ethanol extracted the low molecular weight polyphenolic compounds and the tannins were retained in the column from which they were eluted with a mixture of acetone-water 50:50, their retention being governed by their respective molecular weights.
