In May 1980 a neotenous population of the Alpine newt (T. a. alpestris) was discovered in a bog tarn close to the lake Kaulsee, Bavaria [West Germany]. The neotenous newts were characterized by dark body color, high tailcrests and broad heads. The neoteny may be caused by ecological factors of the habitat, a moor with a tendency towards a bog, exceptional for Alpine newts.
