A randomized controlled trial of pyrantel and mebendazole in children with enterobiasis and concomitant ascariasis

A randomized controlled trial of pyantel (10 mg/kg, single dose) and mebendazole (200 mg, single dose) was done in 196 children with enterobiasis diagnosed by perianal cellophane patch smear. In addition, stool examination was also done by Kato's thick smear for ascariasis. Response was evaluated 11 days after treatment by taking perianal smears on 4 consecutive mornings and by Kato's thick smear examination of stool on day 15. Cure was defined for enterobiasis as all 4 perianal smears negative for Enterobius vermicularis eggs, and for ascariasis as Kato's thick smear negative for Ascaris lumbricoides eggs. Enterobiasis was cured in 96% patients (95/99) in the pyrantel group and in 60% patients (58/97) in the mebendazole group (p < 0.001). Of 99 patients in the pyrantel group, 85 had concomitant ascariasis, and this infection was cured in 88% of them (75/85). Of 97 patients in the mebendazole group, 84 had concomitant ascariasis, among whom the cure rate was 64% (54/84). The difference was significant (p < 0.001).
