A study of oogenesis in hydra oligactis and hydra attenuata 4. phagocytic activity of oocytes

The oocytes of Hydra were investigated by EM during late oogenesis characterized by their phagocytic activity. The oocyte situated in the center of an epidermal thickening grows more rapidly than the surrounding oocytes and phagocytizes them. Dense enzymatic granules are formed in the Golgi apparatus which may be included in the class of primary lysosomes. They secrete their contents in the intercellular space which may be a cause of death of surrounding cells prior to their consumption by the growing oocyte. The consecutive stages of formation of secondary lysosomes, multivesicular bodies and phagolysosomes (heterophagic vacuoles), in the ooplasm are described. No granules of protein yolk are formed in the oocytes, and the cytoplasm is gradually filled by phagolysosomes. Monomers formed as a result of digestion of the phagocytized structures are included in the general metabolic pool of the cell. The typical yolk is absent in Hydra, unlike the vast majority of animals; utilization of biopolymers begins in oogenesis and continues in embryogenesis.
