The vertical distribution of SO42-, dissolved S2- alkalinity, pH, Fe and Mn, Fe2+ and Mn2+ and humic substances was monitored for 1 yr in a seasonally anoxic lake, Rostherne Mere, UK. During summer stratification Mn2+, probably of sediment origin, accumulated in the hypolimnetic bottom waters to a concentration of 50 .mu.m. Release occurred in 2 stages and appeared to be related to the supply of organic material to the sediment. No Fe2+ or dissolved S2+ were detected in the water column, although they were measured in the interstitial waters of the sediment. FeS formation in the sediment controls the Fe2+ and dissolved S2- concentrations and so minimizes the concentration gradients at the sediment-water interface. Electron acceptors other than O2 are capable of oxidizing Fe2+ and S2- ions in the water column. Alkalinity and pH were the only other chemical components to vary appreciably with depth, reflecting the biological processes of photosynthesis, respiration and decomposition. Fe and humic substances simultaneously increased in the surface waters after a major flood, indicating that they are both present in the solution in contact with the soils of the catchment.
