A survey of hemoglobinopathy found in tokyo japan metropolitan area

A survey of hemoglobinopathy found in tokyo japan metropolitan area

Journal of the Medical Society of Toho University 31(2-3): 189-198

Blood samples obtained from over 10,000 individuals living in the Tokyo [Japan] metropolitan area were examined to discover and study cases of hemoglobinopathy. The subjects were not chosen at random from the population, but from OPD [Out-Patient Department] patients with various complaints and from patients who were transferred from various medical facilities for further blood examinations. Among the subjects, there were 8 cases with thalassemia, of which 6 were Japanese and 2 were Chinese. The 6 Japanese cases consisted of 2 A2F-thalassemia, 3 A2-thalassemia and 1 F-thalassemia; they came from the Kanto or Tohoku districts. Of the Chinese patients 1 had A2F-thalassemia and the other had A2-thalassemia. In 1 patient with A2F-thalassemia, who came from the Tohoku district, an obvious inheritance pattern was recognized spanning the last 4 generations. In the 1st generation .beta.-chain synthesis of the hemoglobin molecule revealed remarkably decreased values (.beta./.alpha. ratio was 0.33).
