A survey of hemolytic reaction due to administration of the amino compound of quinine

A study of the haemolytic reaction due to primaquine in a Buyi nationality village of Luodian county, Guizhou province in April 1982 was reported. It was found that 81 out of 576 persons developed haemolytic reaction after this administration of the medicine. The rate of such reaction was 1.96% and was significantly higher in male (19.87%) than female (7.20%). 29 patients who developed such a haemolytic manifestation were found to be of kinship marriage among 35 cases investigated with a rate of 82.86%. G6PD of erythrocyte was found to be a causative factor probably owing to the fact that 75 out of 81 haemolytic patients were found to be running low of G6PD. Therefore, haemolytic occurrence fits well with the genetic feature. Meanwhile the activity of G6PD is normal among those nonhaemolytic people. This suggests that the cause of the haemolytic reactions by primaquine may be due to the genetic deficiency of G6PD synthesized in erythrocyte.
