A taxonomic study of 2 subspecies of apis mellifera apis mellifera mellifera and apis mellifera ligustica in a process of hybridization using numerical techniques

A taxonomic study of 2 subspecies of apis mellifera apis mellifera mellifera and apis mellifera ligustica in a process of hybridization using numerical techniques

Revista del Museo de La Plata Seccion Zoologia 13(134): 45-63

A numerical taxonomic study was conducted on 16 samples of workers from bee-likes of the southeast of Buenos Aires province; all of them were a mixture of 2 subspecific taxa: A. m. mellifera and A. m. ligustica. Each of the samples was compared with a pure sample of each taxon employing 9 characters (8 quantitative and 1 qualitative), and using cluster analysis and ordination by principal component analysis (PCA). The results of both analyses are in general agreement and suggest: individuals clearly belonging to one or the other subspecies are rare; 75% of the samples are composed by individuals that are closers to A. m. mellifera; the most important characters to distinguish both subspecies are: index of abdominal thinness, breadth of the gastral sternites VI, V and III, cubital index, and color of the 3 1st tergites; a lower degree of aggresive behavior is correlated with a higher value of cubital index and width of wings and a lower value of the breadth of the sternites, the length of the tergites and hind leg.
