Abdominal tergal glands of the american cockroach periplaneta americana orthoptera blattidae

Abdominal tergal glands of the american cockroach periplaneta americana orthoptera blattidae

Folia Morphologica 27(3): 203-214

The tergal abdominal glands of P. americana (adults of both sexes and mnyphs) are described. The histology of various glands is detailed. In adults of both sexes and nymphs, there are 2 paired glandular sacs. One paired sac lies between the 5th and 6th tergites and it is proposed that it produces a defensive secretion. The 2nd pair of glandular sacs lie at the base of the 10th tergite and it is proposed that they produce the aggregating pheromone. In adult males, the first 4 abdominal tergites become glandular in parts. These male specific glandular plates may produce aphrodisiac pheromone. In nymphs of both sexes, the distal parts of the 6th and 7th tergites become glandular. Two types of population of secretory cells were observed in these glandular plates which are assumed to produce defensive materials.
