Action of sublethal concentrations of the fixative glutaraldehyde on cytomorphogenesis and ultrastructure in micrasterias denticulata breb
In the present studies the action of sublethal concentrations of the fixative glutaraldehyde on growth and ultrastructure of differentiating cells of the green alga Micrasterias denticulata had been studied by light- and electron microscopy. It could be found that this compound leads to characteristic bubble-like cell-lobes and to an inhibition of the formation of the secondary wall. The ultrastructure of the primary wall, of the dictyosomes and the chloroplast were changed in a typical manner. The observed aberrations of growth and ultrastructure indicate that glutaraldehyde induces the well known syndrome of the "anuclear type of development" ("ATD-syndrom") which as is known from many studies is induced by an inhibition of protein synthesis. It is concluded that glutaraldehyde used as sublethal concentrations leads to the same or similar effects as well known inhibitors of protein synthesis. The molecular mechanism of this action is not yet understood.
