Activity of the hypothalamo pituitary adrenal system after acute and chronic stress in male rats

Hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal [HPA] system activity was estimated by 11-oxycorticosteroid level fluorimetrically determined. Repeated shaking of the male rats in a shuttle-apparatus induced adaptation to stress. This adaptation was expressed in decreased reactivity and increased response lability of the HPA system following stress.
