Acute parkinsonism due to organophosphate insecticide intoxication

Acute parkinsonism due to organophosphate insecticide intoxication

Neurobiologia 47(4): 273-280

Acute parkinsonism due to organophosphate intoxication was studied in 3 patients. The patients are agriculture workers who used organophosphate for a long time, developing chronic organophosphate exposure, being victims of an episode of acute organophosphate intoxication when they developed the sickness. The etiology of acute parkinsonism is discussed in terms of a balance between cholinergic and dopaminergic neurotransmission in the striatum. The possibility of bio-isosteric theory applied to the organophosphate insecticides was discussed.
