The responses from atrial nerve endings of cats were studied in in situ isolated strips. Stretching of the strip was done manually and instrumentally. Ten endings (5 type A and 5 type B) were studied by each technique. The endings were direction sensitive. This direction was found by manual stretching. When the strip was stretched instrumentally, responses from the endings generally deteriorated before they could be studied adequately. Apparently type A and type B endings are similar in response to stretch.
