Age and growth of eisenia bicyclis phaeophyceae laminariales

It is necessary to establish the age structure and growth pattern of E. bicyclis populations in order to develop technologies of marine afforestation. The frequency distribution of growth (arm length) in E. bicyclis populations at the coasts of Iwaki and Oshika [Japan] was divided into 5 different size groups by the computer programs of Macdonald and Pitcher and Akamine for analysis of normal distribution curves. The average arm length of respective size group clearly corresponded to annual growth of the arm length of E. bicyclis that were tagged and seasonally observed at Matsushima Bay. This relationship between age (X) and growth (arm length; Y) was expressed by the formula Y = 3.5277-1.4099 (r = 0.98). The life span of E. bicyclis was estimated at 6 yr from the juvenile stage. The average arm length values from group 1-6 were estimated at 2.12, 5.65, 9.17, 12.70, 16.23 and 19.76 cm, respectively.
