Aggregation pheromones of the european fir engraver beetles pityokteines curvidens pityokteines spinidens and pityokteines vorontzovi and the role of juvenile hormone in pheromone biosynthesis

Secondary attraction in P. curvidens, P. spinidens and P. vorontzovi and the role of juvenile hormone in pheromone biosynthesis were examined. P. curvidens aggregated to S-(-)-ipsenol, and P. vorontzovi to the combination ipsenol and R-(-)-ipsdienol in field tests. Both enantiomers of ipsdienol inhibited the attractant response of P. curvidens to ipsenol. P. spinidens males produced ipsenol and ipsdienol after feeding in host bolts [conifers], but no field results were obtained. Exposure of fed Pityokteines spp. males to myrcene vapors caused greatly increased production of ipsenol and/or ipsdienol. On exposure to racemic or enantiomers of a-pinene, both emergent and fed beetles of both sexes produced cis- and trans-verbenol. Topical application of JHA [juvenile hormone analog) stimulated pheromone biosynthesis in unfed males. When JHA-treated beetles were exposed to myrcene, both sexes produced ipsenol and/or ipsdienol. Upon exposure to ipsdienol vapors, both sexes of JHA-treated beetles produced ipsenol. Air injection into the gut followed by exposure to myrcene stimulated pheromone production by unfed males but not females. JHA-treatment and myrcene exposure did not restore pheromone levels, suggesting that other secretions from the neuroendocrine complex in the head are required for pheromone biosynthesis to occur.
