Trials on making compost were carried out in dry and humid seasons in Guadeloupe (French West Indies). It is necessary to spray water on the windrows only during the dry season to get a compost with a C/N ratio about 16. The duration of composting is 3 mo. Chemical analysis at the end of composting shows major element concentrations lower than those found in composts of industrialized countries. The balanced ratio of minor elements and the low content of heavy metals of this compost improve the humic balance of tropical soils.
