An evaluation of 391 spring wheat triticum aestivum introductions for resistance to stem rust and leaf rust

Three hundred and ninety-one spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) introductions were screened in the greenhouse for seeding resistance to one or more cultures of Puccinia graminis f.sp. tritici and Puccinia recondita, and as adults in the field to a mixture of stem and leaf rust isolates prevalent in Manitoba[Canada]. Thirty-two of the introductions had resistance to at least one culture of P. graminis. Genetic studies on 15 of these introductions showed that V226, V314, V320, V519, V524, V609, V611, V614, and V619 had gene Sr30, while V289 and V578 had genes Sr13 and Sr15, respectively. Genes for stem rust resistance in the other introductions were not identified. One hundred of the introductions were resistant to at least one culture of P. recondita. Genetic studies on 28 of these introductions showed that V34, V154, V160, V187, V298, V418, and V623 had gene the remaining introductions were not identified. A number of the introductions had adult-plant resistance to P. recondita, due possibly to genes Lr12 or Lr13 or the gene in RL6077.
