Fenugreek and its fractions when added to a diet caused hypocholesterolemia in rats. Fenugreek significantly prevented the rise in serum cholesterol in rats fed on a hypercholesterolemic diet. Among the fenugreek fractions, lipid extract and trigonelline had no such effect, while the defatted fractions, gum isolate and the crude saponins showed hypocholesterolemic activity. Substitution of hypercholesterolemia inducing diet with fenugreek for 4 weeks significantly reduced (P < 0.001) the elevated cholesterol levels. In contrast, triglyceride levels were not affected.
