An immunohistochemical study of primary malignant lymphomas of orbital and adnexal regions

An immunohistochemical study of primary malignant lymphomas of orbital and adnexal regions

Nippon Ganka Gakkai Zasshi 92(6): 1057-1062

Immunohistochemical studies on 4 cases of primary orbital and conjunctival malignant lymphomas were reported. According to the Lymphoma Study Group classification, diffuse small cell type was found in one case, diffuse medium-sized cell type in 2 cases and diffuse mixed type in one case. Fresh biopsied materials fixed with periodate-lysate-paraformaldehy desolution for immunohistochemical study were used. Staining was performed with different monoclonal antibodies including HLA-DR, B1, B2, B4, BA-1, J5, PCA-1, Leu4, immunoglobulins, Ki-67 and alkaline phosphatase. Positive reactions for B1, B2, B4, BA-1 in 4 cases indicated B-cell origin. A positive reaction for alkaline phosphatase in 2 cases suggested that lymphoma cells might occur from mantle-zone lymphocytes. The other 2 cases were thought to be lymphomas occurring from follicular center cell. A very low positivity for Ki-67 in 4 cases suggested that lymphoma cells in the proliferating phase are extremely sparse in number.
