An ultrastructural study of the thyroid gland in the pre metamorphic xenopus laevis tadpole

An ultrastructural study of the thyroid gland in the pre metamorphic xenopus laevis tadpole

Journal of Anatomy 125(3): 579-592

ISSN/ISBN: 0021-8782

The thyroid gland of the pre-metamorphic tadpole of X. laevis was studied. A simple method for obtaining thyroid tissue in anuran tadpoles for ultrastructural study was described. Follicle and colloid formation in the thyroid gland was observed at an earlier stage than described previously. At the stage of appearance of hindlimbs, the follicle cells showed special activity. The activity of the thyroid gland of pre-metamorphic tadpoles did not depend on the hypothalamo-hypophyseal axis. Light and parafollicular cells were present in the thyroid gland of these tadpoles.
