Factors affecting the quantitative determination of phenolic acids in plant material by GLC of their trimethylsilyl derivatives, employing silicone stationary phases, were investigated. The use of soft glass must be strictly avoided, while borosilicate (Pyrex), quartz and support surfaces must be deactivated by silanization. Both capillary and packed columns were used. The method developed was applied to the analysis of phenolic acids in spices and by careful attention to the factors discussed; excellent results were achieved.
