Angioarchitecture of the optic nerve 1. distribution of the ophthalmic artery and the ciliary artery in guinea pigs

After injecting India ink through the ascending aorta, the distribution of the ophthalmic artery and the ciliary artery surrounding the optic nerve was examined from the standpoint of regional anatomy in 11 guinea pigs. Two ophthalmic arteries were identified, one deriving from the internal carotid artery and the other from the external carotid artery. The crossing (of the ophthalmic artery and the optic nerve) occurred on the dorsal aspect of the optic nerve 2-3 mm behind the eyeball without forming an arterial plexus. At this point, the 2 ophthalmic arteries formed an anastomosis. Five or 6 long and short ciliary arteries were observed. The ciliary arteries branched from a rather wide area of the ophthalmic artery derived from the external carotid artery. The number of the long ciliary artery was at least 3.
