Annual rhythm in the excretion of larvae of dictyocaulus viviparus varestrongylus sagittatus and elaphostrongylus cervi by red deer cervus elaphus

The discharge of 1st stage larvae of D. viviparus, V. sagittatus and E. phostrongylus cervi is regulated by a seasonal rhythm. This rhythm was studied in a deer population of 150 .+-. 10 animals over a period of 4 yr. The maximum discharges of D. viviparus are in May and June, and those of the 2 other species from Feb. to April. Very good results were found in treatment with 3 .times. 7.5 mg and 5 .times. 3 mg fenbendazole/kg live wt against D. viviparus and E. cervi, respectively. A dose of 5 .times. 3 mg fenbendazole had a good effect against V. sagittatus. THe most favorable time of treatment is late Nov. or early Dec.
