Antifungal and antibacterial action of maleamic acids

The antifungal and antibacterial properties of 12 N-aryl-maleamic acids were tested on cultures of Aspergillus niger, A. fumigatus, Penicillium cyclopium, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Mycobacterium lacticola, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas fluorescens. All of the compounds showed bacteriostatic activity and 9 were fungistatic. The activity of the fungistatic agents was stronger. No difference in the sensitivity of gram- positive and -negative bacteria was noted. The antimicrobial action of the studied compounds was a function of their chemical structure.
