Antigen and allergen properties of some atypical bacilli and those of mycobacterium avium 2. skin reactions to homologous and heterologous purified protein derivative preparations in artificially sensitized guinea pigs

Antigen and allergen properties of some atypical bacilli and those of mycobacterium avium 2. skin reactions to homologous and heterologous purified protein derivative preparations in artificially sensitized guinea pigs

Polskie Archiwum Weterynaryjne 22(1): 19-28

Albino guinea pigs were sensizitzed to M. kansasii, scotochromogenic bacilli of Nicolas strain, M. fortuitum and M. avium and after 4-10 wk, 420 homologous and 100 heterologous units of PPD [purified protein derivative] preparations were injected intradermally. The bacilli had sensitizing properties. PPD preparations obtained from them differed in biological activity and specificity. Sensitin from M. kansasii was characterized by the greatest sensitizing strength. Bacilli of Nicolas strain had weak sensitizing properties and sensitin obtained from them was fairly active but not specific. A correlation was found between the degree of antigenic relationship of the bacilli, determined by immunoelectrophoresis, and the intensity of cross allergic reactions occurring in sensitized animals. No connection was found between the bacilli sensitizing capability and activity of PPD preparations obtained from them.
