Architectonic peculiarities of the root system in the agen 707 plum grafted on cherry plum in relation to age

Lucrari Stiintifice Institutul Agronomic "Nicolae Balcescu" Horticultura 28: 47-52

Under identical soil and climate conditions, the age of the trees has a considerable influence on the root system. On slightly podzolized reddish-brown forest soil the penetration in depth of the roots varies between 0 and 83 cm in 7-year-old trees and between 0 and 100 cm in 11-year-old trees. Most of the roots are located between 0 and 53 cm in 7-year-old trees and between 0 and 83 cm in 11-year-old trees. In the younger trees (7 years) the number of roots increases horizontally with the distance from the trunk; in the older (11 years) there is a more marked through relatively uniform increase in the number of roots within a radius of 1 to 3 m from the trunk. In both age groups the large proportion of roots under 1 mm in diameter (97.44 per cent and 84.04 percent respectively) points out the fascicular character of the root system in Agen 707 plums. As the trees grow older, there is a corresponding increase in the number of roots over 1 mm in diameter (from 2.56 percent in 7-year-old trees to 15.92 percent in 11-year-old trees).
