Assimilation of food by the caterpillars of the large white butterfly pieris brassicae l. lepidoptera pieridae feeding on cabbage hedge garlic and onion

Assimilation of food by the caterpillars of the large white butterfly pieris brassicae l. lepidoptera pieridae feeding on cabbage hedge garlic and onion

Entomologicheskoe Obozrenie 66(1): 19-25

Growth, development, assimilation of food and metabolic efficiency were studied on V stage larvae of Pieris brassicae L. feeding on the usual (Brassica oleracea L., Alliaria petiolata L.) and unusual (Allium cepa L.) host-plants. The coefficient of assimilation was 36.6% on cabbage, 31.7% on hedgegarlic and 62.7% on onion. The efficiency of conversion of the digested food was 55.2, 50.9 and 36.5%, respectively. Feeding of P. brassicae on A. cepa in nature is probably prevented by oviposition preference of the females. Change of the food results in essential change in growth of the larvae, which can be explained by peculiarities of detoxification of the secondary compounds of the host plants.
