Chromatophore membranes (CM) from photosynthetic bacteria Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides R-26, Rhodospirillum rubrum and Chromatium minutissimum were oriented in polyacrylamide gel. Light-minus-dark difference absorption spectra on photooxidation of reaction centers (RC) were measured in linearly polarized light. A simple analysis of linear dichroism data revealed orientation of the longest and the shortest axes of RC particles in relation to the CM plane. The angle between the longest axis of RC and the CM plane did not exceed 35.degree.; this agrees with the findings of Raffery and Clayton (1979). The angle between the shortest axis of RC and the CM plane was > 35.degree. The orientation of the shortest axis of RC was studied for the 1st time.
